DEEP-SEA ECOLOGY & EVOLUTION

Herrera Lab

​

The Herrera Lab of Deep-Sea Ecology and Evolution investigates the connections between ocean environmental variability and biodiversity over time and space. We apply high-throughput omics techniques, computationally intensive analytical tools, oceanographic field work, and laboratory experiments to study deep-sea ecosystems' past, present, and future. Our work informs the management of marine ecosystems vulnerable to environmental change and other threats. Our research is interdisciplinary; we work closely with physical oceanographers, geochemists, geologists, molecular biologists, marine engineers, and natural resource managers.

We are currently seeking to recruit Ph.D. Students and Postdoctoral Researchers to expand our work in environmental DNA (eDNA) and comparative genomics. Ideal candidates would have substantial background and significant research experience in molecular biology methods and bioinformatics. Fieldwork

Members of the Herrera lab have led or participated in over 40 oceanographic research expeditions. We have conducted over 1,000 deep-sea dives with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and the human-occupied vehicle (HOV) Alvin for our research. Geographically, our work has occurred in the North Atlantic, Central and South Pacific, the Southern Ocean, and the Mediterranean, Celebes, and Caribbean seas and the Gulf of Mexico.
